Presentation

shakespeareIn the beginning was… the Teacher Training College. The Department of English Language and Literature was set up five years later, in 2001, and it took off with a four-year English major. Staff consisted mostly of visiting academics from the Universities of Debrecen and Cluj, who were willing to contribute with their own expertise and teaching abilities in the work of the budding department. Under dr. Szaffkó Péter’s exquisite leadership and Kiss Attila’s managerial skills, the department has become a success story indeed. Their fine work has been taken up by a relatively young and dynamic team, now serving two lively and accredited undergraduate majors and a minor (English and English-Romanian) and a thriving graduate program in multilingualism and multiculturalism.

Fields of instruction and research include English and American literary history, phonetics, morphology and syntax, intellectual history, theoretical and applied linguistics, translation studies. Much of the work we do is interdisciplinary in nature: British, American, Irish, and Canadian cultural studies, the history of philosophy, cinema studies, and drama theory.

Faculty members are strongly engaged in international cooperation and in a dozen national and international grants. The department hosts a scholarly journal (www.theroundtable.ro) featuring papers presented at national and international conferences.

Thanks to the support of the Debrecen Institute of English and American Studies, the US Information Center, the Canadian and Irish Embassies in Romania, as well as the private donations from visiting lecturers, the Department Library now holds thousands of books usefully complementing the large collection of the University Library. The department has a computer network system, so students and staff have permanent access to computers, word-processing and internet service in the modern Phonetics Laboratory. Photocopying facilities and audio-visual equipments are also available.
